More Than an Average Scare at Thorpe Park

Visitors to Thorpe Park – dubbed “the UK’s most thrilling theme park” – love a good adrenalin rush at the best of times. But every autumn, the thrills and spills of some of the UK’s fastest rollercoasters come with a little extra spice as the Chertsey attraction builds up to Halloween with its annual Fright Night season.

Thorpe Park is a long-term customer of ours. We have been supplying two way radios and support equipment to guarantee network coverage across the 490 acre site for several years now.

Two way handsets are used by security personnel, ride operators, marshalls and entertainment staff throughout the park so they can coordinate the safe, smooth running of all attractions and ensure visitors get as enjoyable an experience as possible.

With visitor numbers swelled by the popular Fright Night festivities, Thorpe Park’s owners, Merlin Entertainments, take on temporary staff to cover the busy period. More staff means a need for more two way radios, so Merlin contacted us to ask for our help.

The main requirement was a quick turnaround – management needed the extra handsets delivered and configured pronto so the new recruits could hit the ground running.

Flexible solutions

The park already runs a fleet of Motorola DP4400e radios, so from our point of view it was a case of making more available on a hire basis to cover the peak period.

One of our priorities is to offer flexible solutions to cover the varying and changing needs of all of our clients, and part of this is making a wide selection of two way radios available both for purchase and for hire.

The DP4400e is a high performance digital model packed with some of Motorola’s most cutting-edge technology. One of the reasons we recommended these handsets to Thorpe Park in the first place was because they are compatible with Motorola’s MOTOTRBO software platform.

Amongst other things, MOTOTRBO allowed us to set up a network of four repeater units across the Thorpe Park site and link them all into a single integrated network providing reliable coverage throughout.

With this infrastructure in place, our job with the additional hire radios was to programme them to the same system and have them ready to go on site when the first new recruits started. We also programmed specific channels for different departments to use, e.g. a channel for security, a channel for ride operators and so on.

We did all of this in double quick time and once again met our client’s requirements with prompt, responsive service.

If you need a temporary boost to an existing two way radio fleet, or if you want to increase capacity on a more permanent basis, give our team a call today and find out how we can help.
