Fifteen men and women, dressed in gold from head to toe, can be seen forming a ‘group hug’ in front of the steps, holding hands, skipping and lying down – all in a perfect circle. Watched by curious passers-by who are capturing the events on their smartphones, the smiling, golden-clad figures hold golden hoops above their heads while still standing in a circle, before forming two facing lines and holding their hoop with their opposite partner. The minute long video ends with the words: ‘Say I do to Fairtrade gold…and commit to making a difference’.
The human ring of gold was formed by Fairtrade campaigners to highlight the plight of gold miners living in poverty around the world and to demanding a better deal for those who work in the most dangerous of conditions. The Fairtrade Standard for Gold & Precious Metals, which was first introduced in 2011, has been revised to further protect miners and their families against poverty and exploitation. Fairtrade Gold supports miners, their families and communities to eliminate child labour, work their way out of poverty and reduce the harmful impacts of mercury and other toxic elements used in processing gold.
The ‘I Do’ display took place on Wednesday 14 January 2015 – one month ahead of St Valentine’s Day – to encourage brides and grooms to buy Fairtrade gold rings. It is part of an incentive raise awareness of Fairtrade Gold and reassure the public that it is not necessarily more expensive to buy than regular gold. The campaign aims to sell 100,000 wedding rings to 50,000 couples.
This touching spectacle was organised for Fairtrade Gold by PR and entertainment company, The Ministry of Fun, which is renowned for its creative and often zany approach to publicity. The Ministry hired Motorola DP2400 radios and earpieces from Brentwood to co-ordinate the sequence. The DP2000 is a durable model with a long battery life, making it particularly suitable for outdoor, energetic activities. The discreet earpieces allowed instructions to be given and received inconspicuously and without detracting from the visual impact of the display.
If your corporate/hospitality event requires two-way radios to improve your communication over any large site, please give us a call on 01245 403520 to discuss your needs.
