As another clever energy-saving feature, the SL1600 is outfitted with a unique Active View display. While the SL1600 does not have a screen in the conventional sense, the shatterproof Active View display uses a matrix of LEDs behind the radio housing to communicate radio information and shuts off when not in use to conserve battery life.

The SL1600 has been designed for easy, intuitive use. The side volume control, dedicated power button, prominent push-to-talk button, and top toggle channel switch have all been designed for quick one-handed. A “fast toggle” channel switch allows users to scroll through 10 channels at a time and there is 1 programmable button that allows users to program up to 7 further features to improve ease-of-use and increase operator efficiency. It also features a micro USB port for convenient charging.
